Sales Essentials 7: Should I leave an answerphone message?

Absolutely. It’s frustrating to not get through and have to call back later, but leave the hanging up to your competitors! Demonstrate genuine interest by leaving a message, and that will improve your odds.

Besides, if you don’t leave a message, it’s a wasted contact. Get the full value out of every call you place by leaving them the important information.

Often we hang up because leaving a message can feel like being put on the spot. It’s worth writing out a quick script for a good voicemail, so that you don’t wing it and miss out something crucial on the spur of the moment. After a few times it will be second nature and you won’t need to consult it.

Don’t leave success to chance. Follow through on these steps, and you can put the phone down knowing you communicated everything you needed to say, you learned everything you wanted to find out, and you know you made a positive connection with a decision maker.
